In order to file an extension you can fill out Form 4868 by April 15, and mail it to the IRS, to push back your filing date 6 months. Filing for an extension allows gives you 6 more months to file your return, but if you are going to owe money, you must include a check for the estimated amount when you mail Form 4868.
Phone or use an extension service provider
You may also file for an extension over the phone or the internet through a service provider, such as Official Payments Corporation. There will be a fee associated with using a service provider, but at this time One Price Taxes doesn't support filing for extensions.
Filing a state extension
Sending in your Form 4868 tells the IRS that you want to file an extension for your federal tax return, but it doesn't let your state know that you need an extension. You must follow your states' instructions in order to file an extension for your state.
